Syllable Division Rules for Grade 1 , Rabbit, Tiger and Camel

Syllable Division Rules for Grade 1

Syllable division helps children break longer words into smaller parts, making them easier to read and pronounce. The Rabbit, Tiger, and Camel rules are simple ways to introduce syllable division to Grade 1 children.

1. Rabbit Rule (VC/CV)

Pattern: Two consonants between two vowels.

Rule: When two consonants come between two vowels, divide the word between the consonants.

This usually gives the first syllable a short vowel sound.

Examples:

  • rab/bit
  • kit/ten
  • muf/fin

In rabbit, the consonants bb come between the vowels a and i. We divide the word between the two consonants to make rab/bit.

2. Tiger Rule (V/CV)

Pattern: One consonant between two vowels.

Rule: When one consonant comes between two vowels, try dividing the word before the consonant. This creates an open first syllable, which usually has a long vowel sound.

Examples:

  • ti/ger
  • pa/per
  • mu/sic

In tiger, we divide the word before g to make ti/ger. The first syllable has a long i sound.

3. Camel Rule (VC/V)

Pattern: One consonant between two vowels.

Rule: When one consonant comes between two vowels, try dividing the word after the consonant. This creates a closed first syllable, which usually has a short vowel sound.

Examples:

  • cam/el
  • rob/in
  • lem/on

In camel, we divide the word after m to make cam/el. The first syllable has a short a sound.

How to Choose the Right Syllable Division Rule

Look at the vowels and the consonants between them.

  • Two consonants: Try the Rabbit rule and divide between them.
  • One consonant: Try the Tiger rule first and divide before the consonant.
  • If the Tiger division does not work: Try the Camel rule and divide after the consonant.

Remember: These rules are helpful guides, but English has exceptions. Children should also listen to the word and learn how it is pronounced.

With practice, children can use these syllable division rules to break longer words into smaller parts and improve their reading skills.
