Place Value Worksheets for Grade 1

Place value helps children understand the value of each digit in a number based on its position. It is an important Grade 1 maths skill that helps children work with numbers, find 10 more or 10 less, and compare numbers.

Understanding Place Value

In a two-digit number, the first digit shows the tens, and the second digit shows the ones.

For example, in 49:

  • 4 is in the tens place, so its value is 40.
  • 9 is in the ones place, so its value is 9.

Together, 40 and 9 make 49.

Finding 10 More, 10 Less, 1 More, and 1 Less

Place value helps children understand how numbers change when we add or subtract 1 or 10.

Using 49 as an example:

  • 10 more: 49 + 10 = 59.
  • 10 less: 49 − 10 = 39.
  • 1 more: 49 + 1 = 50.
  • 1 less: 49 − 1 = 48.

Using Place Value to Identify Odd and Even Numbers

Children can identify odd and even numbers by looking at the ones digit. They do not need to check the entire number.

Even numbers can be grouped into pairs of two with nothing left over. They always end in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.

Examples: 24, 36, 40.

Odd numbers always have one left over when grouped into pairs of two. They end in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9.

Examples: 17, 49.

Children can quickly identify an odd or even number by checking its last digit.

Comparing Numbers Using Place Value

Place value helps children decide which of two numbers is greater or smaller. When comparing two-digit numbers, start with the tens place, the leftmost digit.

  1. Compare the tens digits. The number with the larger tens digit is greater.
  2. If the tens digits are the same, compare the ones digits. The number with the larger ones digit is greater.
  3. If both digits are the same, the numbers are equal.

For example, 46 is greater than 32 because 4 tens is greater than 3 tens. Similarly, 47 is greater than 43 because both numbers have 4 tens, but 7 ones is greater than 3 ones.
