What Are Consonant Blends?
Consonant blends happen when two or three consonants come together in a word and each sound can still be heard.
For example, in the word black, you can hear both the /b/ and /l/ sounds.
When children learn consonant blends, they become better readers and spellers.
Consonant Blends vs. Digraphs
Consonant blends are different from digraphs.
In a blend, each letter keeps its own sound.
In a digraph, two letters work together to make one new sound.
For example:
- Blend: bl in black = /b/ + /l/
- Digraph: sh in ship = one sound, /sh/
Understanding this difference helps children become confident readers.

Learning consonant blends plays a big role in early reading.
When children can group sounds together, they can:

Support Word Decoding
Charts encourage children to look at the whole word instead of guessing from just the first letter.

Pictures beside the words help children connect sounds with meaning. Words like tree, train, and truck become easier to remember.
