Number Counting Activities – 2
Children first learn to recognize numbers from 1 to 10 and begin to understand number order.
Use the activities in our Number Sense Hub to help children practice numbers from 1 to 10 . These activities make early maths learning simple and fun.
Why Is Counting Important for Children?
After learning number recognition, children begin practicing counting.
Counting builds a strong foundation for early maths skills. It also supports logical thinking and everyday learning.
We use numbers in daily life for counting objects, time, money, dates, age, and more.
When children understand counting, they gain confidence and learn that each number represents a real quantity.
For example, the number 2 can represent:
- Two biscuits
- Two toys
- Two jumps
- Two steps
Benefits of Learning to Count
Everyday Problem-Solving
Counting helps children solve simple problems such as counting blocks, toys, or children in a group.
One-to-One Correspondence
Children learn to match each object with one number while counting (e.g., 1, 2, 3).
Logical Thinking
Counting teaches order, sequence, and relationships between numbers and objects.
Language and Memory Skills
Number songs and rhymes improve memory and support language development.
Understanding Cardinality
Children learn that the last number counted represents the total quantity. For example, counting five apples means the total is 5.
