Pre-Writing Skills Development for Young Learners

A Step-by-Step Guide to Pre-Writing Activities and Handwriting Practice for Preschool and Kindergarten

Before introducing letter writing, allow children to develop pre-writing skills.

Start with scribbling in sand trays using their fingers. Then slowly move to paper.

Encourage tracing shapes and lines. Let children create strokes using clay, like rolling a snake. They can also use paint to practice strokes. These activities build strong handwriting skills.

Children should first master basic handwriting strokes. These include vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines.

Once confident, introduce wavy and zigzag lines. Start with loops first, then move to single patterns without loops. Gradually introduce more structured shapes to improve control and coordination.

Do not start with letters immediately. Begin with simple shapes like c. This comes after practicing curves and shapes such as circles, squares, and triangles.

Once children are comfortable, move to letters like o, then progress step by step, for example from c to p. Teach one letter at a time. Do not rush letter formation.
